felicisowl - The BFG is no ordinary giant - quite honestly, humans don't believe giants exist. They do exist, but most of them, like the Bloodbottler and the Fleshlumpeater, are cruel, nasty giants that live in a place called Giant County. They eat children daily and are gruesome even to look at. (Don't even get IDEAS to go there, besides, it's not on your atlas anyway.) The BFG lives in the same place as those bloodthirsty giants, but he is a nice, sensible, and friendly giant who is lonely living in a secluded cave and trying to hide from the other giants. (BFG stands for Big Friendly Giant, but it's kind of a mouthful.) The BFG is trying to learn the English language and instead of eating children, he endure eating snozzcumbers, which are filthy and utterly disgusting. But the most interesting thing about the BFG is that he collects dreams and puts them in jars, and later puts them in children and giants' minds when they are asleep.. And that is how he finds his little "human bean" companion, Sophie, lying in an orphanage. When the BFG takes Sophie to his cave, Sophie is deathly scared - until she finds out that the BFG is a big, friendly giant who would not harm a fly. Sophie and the BFG embark on little adventures together, like eating snozzcumbers, drinking frobscottle, collecting dreams, and even sneaking a ghastly, horrible nightmare into Fleshlumpeater (an equally horrible giant) so that the giants fight (luckily they are not caught!) They are always careful to avoid the other giants until suddenly, a giant comes into the BFG's cave! Luckily, (or not) Sophie hides herself in a giant snozzcumber and when the BFG tricks the giant into eating the snozzcumber, she flies out along with pieces of snozzcumber and giant's spit when the giant spits her out because the snozzcumber is disgusting. After surviving that horrible experience, Sophie comes up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all. That includes the help of the Queen of England, the Queen of England's navy and army, helicopters, and most importantly, the BFG. Will Sophie's plan succeed or will she end up in a giant's stomach like so many other children? Read to find out?
If you do choose to read this book, it'll almost definitely be worth it! The BFG is sure to melt your heart with his sweet friendship with Sophie - and though people say he has really bad grammar, he does, but that's because he didn't have a proper education. One Charles Dickens book is not going to teach him all the rules of grammar, okay? But his philosophy is almost always right, and even though it's a children's book, it has a deeper moral, or a deeper message hidden inside it. Think about it - "humans are the only creatures that kill their own kind." The BFG is very wise in his own way.. But on a lighter tone, this book will be sure to impress with.. clever word-play! I love the word-play in this book, and Roald Dahl probably invented, almost 10 or 20 different words with just this book - he's amazing! This book has foul villains - and as Roald Dahl once said, you get more and more excited when the villain gets fouler and meaner because you want to see the hero crush the villain as the villain becomes more meaner and more fouler. (Can't get more of everything than the giants :D) The heroes? Sophie has her flaws, but she is an absolutely fantastic character overall - and of course, I love the BFG! The idea of catching dreams is just an idea to expand more and more with your imagination.. So, I'm sure this book will land on top of your favorite books' list just like how this book topped many celebrities' lists! Oh, and as the BFG once...
